ABOUT US | Durham Mavericks

The Durham Mavericks Baseball Club is a brand-new organization in the Fergie Jenkins Showcase League. Our teams are based in Durham Region (Ontario, Canada) with players coming from Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington and further. Our core values of working hard, having fun and being great teammates, will not only develop our players into skilled baseball players on the diamond, but also well rounded, strong individuals off the diamond.

We are driven by the idea that youth sports must be, first and foremost, about the players. Whether they want to set a goal of attending college or university to play baseball or be the best competitive baseball players before venturing out into the world to pursue their chosen paths, they are our priority. As Mike Matheny, former MLB player and manager said, "Sports should be about kids and their passion, not about parents and their goals." And we take this seriously.

We encourage our players’ families to be part of the organization through volunteering, fundraising and simply coming out and enjoying watching their kids play. Parents can enjoy the games knowing the coaches’ want all players to be successful and they are constantly supporting, mentoring and teaching the players throughout the game. During pre-game warmups, players take turns leading the warmup and during post-game chats, coaches encourage players to share their thoughts on the game, including things to work on and positive standout moments during the game.

Our coaches and staff are chosen with care and held accountable for their behaviour. We hold our coaches to the highest of standards when it comes to being knowledgeable about the game, being exemplary in their behaviour and their respect for players, parents, other coaches and their teams, and officials. We expect our coaches to lead by example and support all their players in setting them up with the tools to succeed both on and off the field.

During the off-season, (October to May), we train at multiple specialized facilities within Durham Region allowing us to focus on different elements of training. We do batting practice and bullpens at the batting cages and we use a large, indoor space to do fielding, positional, and situational practice. For our older teams, we arrange an (optional) fitness training program, with personal trainers, teaching the players how to properly do their workouts which helps to improve their overall athleticism. We also incorporate classroom learning sessions throughout the year covering more situational plays and discussing the importance of players’ health and wellness both mentally and physically; two very important factors that contribute to a player’s success both in baseball and in life.

As a member of the Fergie Jenkins Showcase League (FJSL), our regular season runs from May to August, (with playoffs in August), and our teams play double headers on both Saturday and Sunday with travel across southern Ontario. The league has teams as far east as Ottawa and as far west as London. The Mavericks home base is Durham Region, and we use diamonds throughout the Region when we host as the home team. As an organization, we also aim to participate in 3-4 US tournaments between March and July. Tournament options are discussed and decided on during the off-season, giving families time to plan for travel expenses. Families are expected to participate in fundraising and securing sponsorships to help with the cost of attending these tournaments.
